Chandeliers - How to Choose the Right One

By Pamela Tice

Chandeliers can be a beautiful addition to any home. But if you choose the wrong one for your space, you could end up with a light source that crowds out the rest of your rooms décor or a chandelier that seems out of place with the rest of your furnishings. And with so many different types of chandeliers on the market today, choosing the right chandelier can be a more difficult task than you bargained for.

Traditionally, chandeliers were extremely formal in design and were usually elegant, artful displays of intricately cut crystal or glass. While you can still find the traditional crystal chandelier today, this style is sometimes much too formal for the modern home. That is why more people are turning away from the crystal chandelier and embracing chandelier styles such as the Tiffany stained-glass chandelier, Colonial Revival chandelier, teacup chandelier and the Contemporary chandelier, which encompasses a large variety of chandelier styles.

And chandeliers are not just for the dining room. Today you can find a chandelier for almost every room of the house including the kitchen, bathroom, breakfast nook and bedroom.

Most experts agree that when it comes to choosing a chandelier for any space in your home, you should choose a chandelier that matches your homes era and architecture. Doing so allows your chandelier to become a part of your home instead of a decorating element that would need to be changed every time you redecorated.

When choosing which size chandelier to purchase, there are a few pointers that you should follow. First, measure the width of your room. The chandelier should be two inches in diameter for every foot of width. Also take into consideration how ornate the chandelier is. An overly ornate chandelier will look bigger than it actually is when you get it home.

If the chandelier is going to be used in a dining space, you also have to take into consideration the size of your dining table. For most areas a good rule of thumb to follow is to choose a chandelier that is 1/3 the width of your table. This usually works great for round tables. If you have an oval or rectangle table, a wider chandelier such as a pendant with two or more pendants might be your best bet.

Another thing to consider when choosing a chandelier is how much light you want it to provide for the space. While chandeliers in most homes are used as a secondary and decorative light source, the setup of your room may not allow many other lighting fixtures or lamps, especially if you have a small space. If this is the case, you can purchase a chandelier which provides more than enough light to illuminate your space, but install it with a dimmer switch so you can turn it down for a special dinner or intimate gatherings.

Remember these tips the next time you shop for chandeliers. With a little bit of thought and planning, you will be sure to purchase a chandelier that could quickly become your favorite feature of your home.
