Table Lamps- How Tall is Tall Enough?By Pamela Tice Attention to detail and function separates good design from poor design. Table lamps, specifically, fit into both of these categories. With a wide array of designs to suit all decors, table lamps function in a space providing light, just as much as they contribute to the aesthetic beauty of a room. But, how do you know which lamp is right for you? Picking the perfect design for a table lamp is easy, but is it the right lighting for the space youre trying to fill? Most people dont think of the technical side of design when it comes to choosing lighting, but the location of a lamp can play a large role in the success of your space. First and foremost, if the lamp is to provide additional reading light next to a bed, sofa or chair, be sure to pick a lamp that will shade the bulb from shining in the eyes of individuals sitting near the light source. To determine the ideal height, simply measure from the floor to the top of the table where the lamp will be placed, and measure again from the floor to the ear of the person who will use the space most. The difference in the two measurements will be the height, from the base of the lamp to the bottom edge of the shade. Take this measurement with you when you shop for your new table lamp to make sure you have selected the appropriate size. A table lamp, regardless of its use, is only as good as the light it provides. If task lighting is the purpose of your new lamp, make sure the lamp provides at least 100 watts of light. While most standard table fixtures support 60 watt bulbs, a table lamp featuring a single three-way socket will be the best buy for your money, since it allows you to customize your lighting to suit your needs. Lamps with multiple lower watt sockets can also provide a range of lighting possibilities for a space, and should not be overlooked. High-traffic areas are usually not the best place for table lamps, especially if you have kids. But, try as we do, sometimes table lighting is a must in spite of its location. You will often find that a table lamp with a heavier base is best for such areas, as the weight will prevent tipping and falling.
